The Growing Diabetes Burden in Ethiopia
Type 2 diabetes has more than doubled in prevalence in Addis Ababa over the last decade, driven by urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, and dietary changes. At Bethzatha's Diabetes Clinic, we see approximately 80 new diabetic patients every month.
Understanding Your Blood Sugar Numbers
Your fasting blood glucose target should be between 70-130 mg/dL. HbA1c — the 3-month average — should be below 7% for most patients. If you don't know your HbA1c, ask your doctor to order it at your next visit.
The Ethiopian Diet and Diabetes
Injera, while a staple, has a high glycemic index. This doesn't mean eliminating it — but reducing portion sizes and pairing injera with high-protein stews (shiro, tibs, lentils) significantly blunts the blood sugar spike.
**Key dietary strategies:** - Replace refined grains with barley or oats where possible - Increase legume intake — misir wot, ater, and shiro are excellent choices - Limit sweet drinks including fruit juice — water and unsweetened tea are better - Eat smaller, more frequent meals to avoid large blood sugar swings
Exercise: The Underused Medicine
A 30-minute walk after your main meal can reduce post-meal blood sugar by 20-30%. It doesn't require a gym. Walking to destinations, taking stairs, and evening strolls all count.
When to Seek Immediate Care
Seek emergency care if your blood sugar is above 300 mg/dL with symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, confusion, or vomiting. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency.
Your Medications Matter
Metformin remains the first-line treatment. Never stop your medication without consulting your doctor, even when you feel well — blood sugar control requires continuous management.
