Neurological Symptoms Are Often Dismissed
At Bethzatha's Neurosurgery department, we frequently see patients who delayed care for months — or years — because they attributed serious neurological symptoms to stress, fatigue, or aging. Early diagnosis changes outcomes dramatically.
Symptoms That Warrant Neurological Evaluation
### Persistent Headaches A headache that is the "worst of your life," wakes you from sleep, is accompanied by fever and neck stiffness, or is new after age 50 deserves investigation. Not every headache is migraine — some signal aneurysm, meningitis, or elevated intracranial pressure.
### Numbness or Weakness in One Part of the Body Unilateral weakness or numbness — especially if it comes on suddenly — can signal TIA (mini-stroke) or stroke. Time is critical. Get to emergency care immediately.
### Memory Changes or Confusion Progressive memory loss, getting lost in familiar places, or personality changes can indicate early dementia, medication effects, or treatable conditions like thyroid disease or B12 deficiency.
### Seizures Any seizure in an adult — even a single one — requires full neurological evaluation. Causes range from epilepsy to brain tumors to electrolyte imbalances.
### Balance Problems or Frequent Falls Cerebellar conditions, vestibular disorders, and Parkinson's disease all present with balance problems. Falls in adults over 60 cause significant morbidity and should never be attributed simply to "old age."
### Vision Changes Double vision, sudden vision loss, or visual field defects are often neurological rather than ophthalmological in origin.
When to Go to Emergency
Sudden severe headache, facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty — use the FAST test. These signs of stroke require emergency care within 4.5 hours for effective treatment.
